Review - After the success of her first two albums, 'Brandi Carlile' and 'The Story', singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile just released her third album, 'Give Up The Ghost'.
Amidst non-stop touring, Carlile toured with the likes of The Indigo Girls, Tori Amos and Newton Faulkner next to headlining her own shows, the 28-year-old American has let her guard down for this album and offers her most candid and personal recording to date. 'Give Up The Ghost' features her longtime band including twins Tim and Phil Hanseroth, cellist Josh Neumann and was recorded at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, CA.
The recording of 'Give Up The Ghost' presented the realisation of a dream for Carlile – the opportunity to finally work with her idol, Elton John. Carlile flew to Las Vegas to meet with Sir Elton. There they recorded the vocals and Elton John's piano piece for the upbeat track 'Caroline'.
"Brandi has an amazing voice," he says. "She's a great songwriter and has a tremendous career ahead of her."
Elton John was a key influence in the development of Carlile. "I've been listening to country and western music my whole life and I was totally immersed in Grand Ole Opry culture, wherein the entertainers are usually not the ones who wrote the music. But when I was 11 and discovered Elton John, I realized that performers do write and perform their own songs and I immediately went out and got a keyboard and started writing," she says.
When speaking of their time recording together, she states "I was just overwhelmed by the years and by the influence that somebody can have on another person's life without even knowing it."
'Give Up The Ghost' also features appearances from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers multi-instrumentalist Benmont Tench, drummer Chad Smith and Amy Ray of The Indigo Girls, all of whom contribute their various talents to Carlile's already astounding selections.
